Wondering which popular diet will help you shed extra weight in a healthy way this year? According to the latest U.S. News & World Report, the Mediterranean diet continues to dominate as one of the best diets for 2025.
Topping the charts across multiple categories, the Mediterranean diet, which reflects the traditional eating habits of people living in Mediterranean countries, was hailed as the most highly-rated plan. Despite its name, it’s not a branded diet, but rather a broad, sustainable eating pattern focused on heart health. It has been shown to reduce risks for obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.
Each year, U.S. News works with a panel of medical and nutrition experts to review and evaluate a wide array of eating plans. This year, the publication introduced an updated rating system that moves beyond just weight loss, encompassing overall well-being, chronic disease prevention, and specialized needs.
Gretel Schueller, managing editor of health at U.S. News, explained, “The updated evaluation system reflects the diverse needs and goals of individuals, considering factors beyond weight loss.”
In addition to the traditional categories, 2025’s report introduced 12 new “Best Diets” categories, designed to address specific health concerns and lifestyle needs. For example, in the ‘Best Diets for Mental Health’ category, the Mediterranean diet secured the top spot with a 4.6 rating. Following closely are the MIND Diet (4.4 rating) and the Flexitarian Diet (3.8 rating). The MIND Diet, which combines principles from the Mediterranean and DASH diets, was specifically designed to support cognitive health, while the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet also earned recognition for its heart-healthy benefits.
Moreover, this year’s report spotlighted 13 specialty diets, including the AIP Diet (autoimmune protocol), the Low FODMAP Diet, which helps with IBS symptoms, and the Acid Reflux Diet.
The report underscores that diets like the Mediterranean, DASH, and MIND diets remain among the best choices for improving mental health, cardiovascular health, and overall longevity. Each plan aligns with the latest scientific insights, providing a holistic approach to nutrition.
