Bengaluru, India – A shocking incident of violence within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital has ignited a massive controversy, as CCTV footage of a physical altercation between a resident doctor and a male nurse went viral. The confrontation, stemming from a dispute over mask compliance, has led to widespread condemnation and demands for swift action.

The incident unfolded at approximately 9:30 am when Dr. Chandra Prakash, a resident doctor, reportedly instructed a female nurse to adhere to the NICU’s mandatory mask policy. According to reports, the situation escalated when the nurse allegedly failed to comply, prompting Dr. Prakash to approach the nursing in-charge.

The ensuing confrontation, which occurred within the in-charge’s chamber, involved male nurses Suresh Chaudhary and Vinod. Dr. Prakash alleges that Suresh Chaudhary physically assaulted him, first with a slipper and then with an iron plate, while other nurses restrained him. “It was an attempt to kill me… I will file a police complaint and demand the suspension of the nurse involved,” Dr. Prakash reportedly stated.

However, the nursing staff presents a starkly different narrative. Suresh Chaudhary claims that Dr. Prakash initiated the altercation by shouting and using abusive language, culminating in him slapping Suresh in front of other staff members. “Attempts were made to maintain peace… then it led to a physical fight,” Suresh Chaudhary stated.

The incident has triggered a wave of protests from both sides. The Resident Doctors Association (RDA) has thrown its support behind Dr. Prakash, demanding a thorough investigation and strict action against the nurses involved. Conversely, the nursing staff has threatened to launch a strike if any biased actions are taken against them.

Dr. Anil Samariya, the Principal of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, has acknowledged the incident as “unfortunate” and has established an internal inquiry committee, headed by senior doctor Sanjeev Maheshwari, to investigate the matter. “No one was injured… the report will be submitted soon,” Dr. Samariya stated.

The viral CCTV footage has fueled public outrage, prompting calls for transparency and accountability. The incident has raised serious concerns about workplace safety and professional conduct within the hospital’s critical care unit. Both parties have filed formal complaints regarding the incident. The outcome of the investigation will be closely watched by the medical community and the public alike.
