Dhaka, Bangladesh – Bangladesh reported its first fatality from the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) on Thursday, marking a significant development in the country’s fight against the respiratory virus.

Sanjida Akhter, a woman with pre-existing health conditions including obesity, kidney issues, and lung complications, succumbed to the virus on Wednesday evening at the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Dhaka.

While HMPV had been detected in Bangladesh since 2017, this is the first reported death attributed to the virus.

Multiple Factors Contributed to Death

According to hospital authorities, the deceased also tested positive for Klebsiella Pneumoniae, a type of pneumonia, further complicating her health.

“The patient had several underlying conditions, which likely contributed to the severe outcome,” said Ariful Bashar, a senior consultant at the hospital.

HMPV: A Growing Concern

Discovered in 2001, HMPV is a common respiratory virus that can cause a range of illnesses, from mild colds to severe pneumonia.

“HMPV can cause significant respiratory problems, especially in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems,” stated Ahmed Nowsher Alam, head of virology at the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR).

No Specific Treatment Available

Currently, there is no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment for HMPV. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and providing supportive care to patients.

Public Health Officials Urge Vigilance

The IEDCR has urged the public to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of HMPV.

“Maintaining good hand hygiene, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when sick are crucial steps in preventing the transmission of respiratory viruses,” advised Tahmina Shirin, Director of IEDCR.
