The government, through the National Health Mission, has undertaken numerous measures to advance universal health coverage by aiding state governments in delivering accessible and affordable healthcare services to citizens. Financial and technical assistance is extended to states and union territories to ensure quality healthcare, especially targeting disadvantaged communities in both rural and urban areas. This mission focuses on enhancing health infrastructure, bolstering human resources in healthcare facilities, and expanding access to quality healthcare, particularly for underserved populations in rural regions.

Four mission-driven projects, including PM-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM), Ayushman Arogya Mandir, Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), and Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), have been launched. The Ayushman Bhav Campaign, initiated by the President of India, aims to saturate essential healthcare services in every village and town, aligning with the Prime Minister’s commitment to ensure healthcare accessibility for all. This campaign encompasses various interventions like ‘Ayushman – Apke Dwar 3.0,’ health events, and the distribution of Ayushman Cards.

PM-ABHIM focuses on developing capacities across primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare systems, along with strengthening national institutions to tackle emerging diseases. It’s a centrally sponsored scheme with an allocated budget until 2025-26. Ayushman Arogya Mandir emphasizes comprehensive primary healthcare, catering to a broad range of services, including reproductive and child healthcare, communicable and non-communicable diseases.

Under the Ayushman Bharat, Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), vulnerable families receive health coverage of up to Rs. 5.00 lakh per year. The National Health Policy targets enhancing maternal and infant health indicators, with current figures for Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR), Infant Mortality Rate (IMR), and Total Fertility Rate standing at 97, 28, and 2, respectively. Additionally, the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) aims to establish a robust digital health infrastructure.

Various health programs under the NHM include the operationalization of health and wellness centers, support for health human resources, ambulance services, quality assurance standards, and initiatives focusing on adolescent health, anemia prevention, tuberculosis eradication, nutrition rehabilitation, and immunization, among others.

The 2017 National Health Policy aims for universal access to high-quality healthcare services, emphasizing access, affordability, equity, and patient-centeredness. The government continues to supplement state efforts by implementing initiatives to provide affordable and quality healthcare services.
