In a significant step toward inclusive healthcare, the Government of India has reported notable progress and new developments in the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) and the Ayushman Vay Vandana Scheme, aimed at providing accessible healthcare to senior citizens nationwide.

Expansion of Coverage to All Senior Citizens

Effective 29th October 2024, the scope of AB-PMJAY was expanded to cover all senior citizens aged 70 years and above, regardless of their socio-economic background. This allows a broader group of elderly Indians to benefit from free medical treatment up to ₹5 lakh per year under the Ayushman Vay Vandana cards.

Nationwide Portability: Access to 31,466 Hospitals

In a move that champions seamless care, the portability feature now enables eligible beneficiaries—including those holding Vay Vandana cards—to receive treatment at any of the 31,466 empanelled hospitals across the country. This includes both public and 14,194 private hospitals, ensuring consistent, equitable services regardless of the beneficiary’s state or city of residence.

Guidelines for Quality Assurance

To uphold high standards in healthcare provision, the National Health Authority (NHA) has rolled out comprehensive Hospital Empanelment and Management (HEM) guidelines. These regulations aim to standardize hospital registration and service delivery under the AB-PMJAY banner.

Claims Update

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, more than 1.06 lakh claims have already been settled under the Ayushman Vay Vandana scheme since its inception. This milestone highlights the scheme’s reach and its impact on India’s elderly population.

The update was formally communicated by Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
