In a significant milestone, the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri – Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) has achieved the issuance of over 30 crore Ayushman cards as of January 12, 2024. Launched by the National Health Authority (NHA), AB PM-JAY is a flagship initiative aiming to provide health coverage of Rs. 5 lakhs per family annually for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization to 12 crore beneficiary families.

The creation of Ayushman cards is a pivotal aspect of AB PM-JAY, and relentless efforts have been undertaken to ensure every eligible beneficiary possesses this card. Notably, more than 16.7 crore Ayushman cards were generated in the last two fiscal years, with over 7.5 crore cards issued during the ongoing 2023-24 financial year. This translates to approximately 181 Ayushman cards created every minute.
The Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra, launched on November 15, 2023, played a crucial role in facilitating on-spot services, contributing significantly to the surge in Ayushman card creation. More than 2.43 crore Ayushman cards were generated during the Yatra, emphasizing the commitment to achieve saturation in various government schemes. The Ayushman Bhava campaign, initiated on September 17, 2023, also led to the creation of more than 5.6 crore Ayushman cards.
To enhance accessibility and outreach, the NHA introduced the ‘Ayushman App’ for Ayushman card creation, incorporating a unique self-verification feature. This feature allows users to create Ayushman cards using a simple 4-step process on their Android mobile phones. The Ayushman App has been downloaded over 52 lakh times since its launch on September 13, 2023, showcasing its widespread acceptance.
Uttar Pradesh takes the lead with 4.83 crore Ayushman cards, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra at the second and third positions, with 3.78 crore and 2.39 crore Ayushman cards, respectively. Eleven states have surpassed 1 crore Ayushman card holders, underlining the nationwide reach of the program.

Gender equity is a crucial aspect of AB PM-JAY, with approximately 14.6 crore Ayushman cards issued for females. The scheme is committed to achieving gender parity, regional parity, and income parity in healthcare service access. Female beneficiaries account for 49% of Ayushman cards issued, and 48% of treatments provided under the scheme have been availed by females.
The Ayushman Card has become a symbol of equity, entitlement, and empowerment, assuring underprivileged families protection against the financial burden of diseases. The government remains dedicated to ensuring that all eligible beneficiaries possess an Ayushman Card.
Furthermore, Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY has successfully facilitated 6.2 crore hospital admissions, amounting to over Rs. 79,157 crores. The scheme’s impact is evident in its substantial cost savings, preventing an estimated out-of-pocket expenditure of more than Rs. 1.25 lakh crores for poor and deprived families if they had sought similar treatments outside the ambit of AB PM-JAY.
