New Delhi, December 18, 2024 – The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) is making rapid strides in transforming India’s healthcare ecosystem with the creation of over 71.16 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHAs), the registration of 3.54 lakh health facilities, and the inclusion of 5.37 lakh healthcare professionals on the Healthcare Professionals Registry (HPR). Additionally, more than 45.99 crore health records have been linked to ABHA, marking a significant step towards digital integration in healthcare.
Launched to build an interoperable and integrated digital health infrastructure, ABDM is designed to create a longitudinal electronic health record for every citizen. It aims to enhance the transparency, security, and accessibility of healthcare while ensuring timely delivery and citizen-centric services.
Key components of the mission include registries such as the Ayushman Bharat Health Account, Health Facility Registry (HFR), Healthcare Professionals Registry, and a proposed Drug Registry. These are envisioned as the backbone of the nation’s digital health ecosystem.
Voluntary Participation and Growing Awareness
ABDM is voluntary, with concerted efforts to raise awareness about its benefits among citizens, healthcare providers, and institutions. Campaigns led by the National Health Authority (NHA) emphasize capacity building for hospitals to integrate ABHA seamlessly into their workflows. Public events such as marathons, medical conferences, and trade fairs have also been leveraged to encourage participation.
States and Union Territories have conducted targeted information, education, and communication (IEC) initiatives to promote local adoption. The integration of ABHA with government programs such as PM-JAY, reproductive child health (RCH), and TB Nikshay, along with QR-based services for quick OPD registration and faster hospital payments, has further propelled adoption.
Private healthcare providers are increasingly adopting ABHA-integrated solutions, reflecting growing support from the private sector in advancing digital healthcare infrastructure.
Strengthening Digital Healthcare
Recognizing the importance of digital record-keeping, the government is committed to strengthening digital healthcare infrastructure and fostering capacity building. ABDM’s frameworks are designed to ensure interoperability and enhance the efficiency of healthcare delivery systems across the country.
Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, emphasized the government’s focus on advancing healthcare digitalization in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
As the mission continues to gain momentum, ABDM is poised to redefine healthcare accessibility and quality in India, creating a robust, transparent, and citizen-centric healthcare system for the future.
