In a move to strengthen and expand the scope of traditional healthcare systems, the Ministry of Ayush has been allocated a substantial budget increase for the 2025-26 fiscal year. The new budget allocation stands at Rs 3,992.90 crore, marking a 14.15% rise from the previous year’s revised estimates of Rs 3,499.39 crore.
The increased funding aims to enhance the ministry’s ability to support and promote India’s ancient healing systems, including Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy (AYUSH). Key areas that will benefit from this budget hike include the National Medicinal Plants Board and the Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy.
The National Medicinal Plants Board will receive Rs 18.59 crore, enabling it to promote the cultivation of medicinal plants. This is crucial for ensuring the sustainable production of plant-based medicines, which play a central role in the AYUSH systems. Similarly, the Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy has been allocated Rs 21.96 crore to focus on the standardization and quality control of AYUSH drugs.
Other autonomous bodies under the Ministry of Ayush, such as research councils and the All India Institute of Ayurveda, are also set to benefit from the increased funding. This financial boost is expected to stimulate further research and development in AYUSH systems, fostering innovation and supporting the global recognition of India’s traditional health sciences.
The Ministry of Ayush continues to play a vital role in promoting alternative medicine practices alongside conventional healthcare, and this funding increase is a clear indication of the government’s commitment to enhancing the infrastructure and research in this field.
