In a significant leap towards promoting integrative healthcare, the Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI), in partnership with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), has launched an ambitious research initiative aimed at fostering entrepreneurship and commercialisation within the Ayush industry. This project, under the auspices of the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Ministry of Ayush, represents a transformative step in both the scientific and business aspects of Ayurveda and traditional Indian medicine.

Launched within the first 100 days of the project’s inception, the research focuses on developing modern management strategies for Ayush products and services, aligning them with global standards while preserving traditional Ayurvedic wisdom. This initiative is expected to drive innovation and expand the scope of the Ayush industry, making Ayurvedic therapies more accessible to a wider population.

In addition to its focus on industry growth, CARI has made impressive strides in community outreach, especially among elderly individuals. Through its specialised outpatient department (OPD), CARI has successfully engaged 2,272 elderly patients, surpassing its initial target. By offering Ayurvedic consultations and therapies tailored to the needs of seniors, the institute is working to improve the overall quality of life for older citizens, addressing age-related health issues and promoting wellness through holistic approaches.

CARI’s efforts also extend to social welfare through the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP), where it conducted 80 outreach tours and organised eight health camps. These initiatives treated over 1,500 patients, with a further 1,980 screenings to identify and manage lifestyle-related disorders. This outreach is a testament to the institute’s dedication to ensuring equitable access to healthcare services, particularly for underserved and vulnerable populations.

In line with its vision for integrated healthcare, CARI is also making strides in academic collaboration. The institute is in the process of setting up a Department of Integrated Medicine at Lady Hardinge Medical College, Delhi. This department aims to bridge the gap between modern medicine and traditional Ayurvedic practices, aligning with the broader objectives of the National Health Policy 2017, which emphasises the importance of integrating traditional and modern healthcare systems.

The collaborative efforts of CARI and JNU in this research project mark the beginning of a new era in the Ayush industry, where scientific rigor and entrepreneurship converge to expand the reach of Ayurveda and traditional Indian medicine on a global scale. As the project unfolds, it promises to usher in a future where integrative healthcare is the cornerstone of holistic well-being for all.
