Following the recent issuance of show-cause notices to more than 350 medical colleges for failing to meet faculty attendance and adherence to Minimum Standard Requirements 2020 (MSR 2020), the National Medical Commission (NMC) has escalated its actions by issuing a stringent warning to these institutions.
Previously, approximately 50% of medical colleges faced scrutiny and show-cause notices due to violations of standards set by the NMC, with 350 out of 654 colleges reprimanded for faculty deficiencies among other MSR 2020 violations. Notably, among the penalized colleges, 197 are government-aided while the rest are private institutes.
The latest directive, issued by the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of NMC, emphasizes strict adherence to UG-MSR 2023 and MSMER 2023. The directive underscores the necessity for compliance with faculty attendance requirements, highlighting that several colleges fell short in meeting the mandated 75% attendance threshold.
NMC has unequivocally notified these institutions that failure to comply with the specified UG-MSR and MSMER requirements will result in severe consequences. The commission has released a list of colleges with deficient faculty attendance and warned of impending actions against those failing to meet the stipulated standards.
The regulatory body has emphasized the importance of the Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBAS) as a mandatory tool for monitoring faculty attendance in medical colleges. Scrutiny of attendance records between June 19, 2023, and September 19, 2023, revealed a notable shortfall in meeting the 75% attendance criterion, leading to NMC’s admonition.
In its notice dated December 18, 2023, NMC explicitly cautioned medical colleges to rectify deficiencies in line with UG-MSR 2023 and MSMER 2023 promptly. It further clarified that applications falling short of these requirements will not be considered for the academic year 2024-2025.
The commission emphasized, “All the Medical Colleges must adhere to the UG-MSR 2023 and MSMER 2023 requirements without delay. Failure to meet these standards will result in the rejection of proposals for seat increases, permission renewals, or degree recognition, consequently barring admissions for the Academic Year 2024-25.”
Colleges not included in the list of deficient institutions have also been cautioned to comply with UG-MSR 2023 and MSMER 2023 standards to avoid punitive measures from the NMC.
