Shimla, May 31, 2025 — In a major relief for foreign medical graduates (FMGs) in Himachal Pradesh, the Atal Medical and Research University (AMRU) has announced plans to commence internships for FMGs from the current academic session. The move is expected to address long-standing concerns among FMGs regarding delays and uncertainty in their internship placements, a crucial step toward obtaining medical registration in India.
The decision was conveyed during a meeting held earlier this week between AMRU officials and representatives of the All FMG Association (AFA). Sixteen FMG students attended the session, where the Controller of Examinations (CoE) addressed questions about internship seat availability and eligibility for the National Eligibility and Entrance Test-Postgraduate (NEET PG) in the upcoming year.
According to sources, the university will issue an official notification within 7 to 10 days, following a scheduled meeting with the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Shimla. This was confirmed by both university officials and the AFA, which shared the update on social media. The Vice Chancellor of AMRU personally assured FMG representatives that the implementation process would be discussed with the CoE to ensure smooth execution of the internship program.
Dr. Kaushal, media coordinator for the AFA, highlighted the urgency of the matter, noting, “While all other states like Uttar Pradesh have started their counselling process for FMG internships, Himachal Pradesh has not issued a single notification. The exam ended in January 2025. This delay clearly puts the FMGs here at a disadvantage.”
The announcement comes after months of uncertainty for FMGs in the state, many of whom have been waiting for clarity since the conclusion of their exams. The development is seen as a significant step forward in aligning Himachal Pradesh with other states that have already begun the FMG internship counselling process.
