California, September 11, 2024 – Apple has unveiled groundbreaking health features in its latest product lineup, with a focus on sleep apnoea detection and hearing health. At its “It’s Glowtime” event, held at Apple Park in California, the tech giant introduced the Apple Watch Series 10 and AirPods Pro 2, both equipped with advanced health monitoring tools.
The Apple Watch Series 10 now includes a sleep apnoea detection feature, a first for the wearable device. This tool will deliver notifications if it detects sleep apnoea, a condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Apple’s Vice President of Health, Dr. Sumbul Desai, stated: “With Apple Watch, we continue to offer our users the ability to uncover important health conditions with new sleep apnoea notifications.”
The sleep apnoea detection is driven by a breathing disturbances metric, which uses the watch’s accelerometer to track subtle wrist movements during sleep that may signal interruptions in respiratory patterns. The technology, developed through machine learning and clinical-grade sleep apnoea tests, aims to alert users when moderate to severe apnoea is detected. This feature will be available on Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and the Apple Watch Ultra 2. However, the feature is pending FDA approval, expected in the coming months, and will roll out in 150 countries afterward.
Additionally, Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 introduces a pioneering suite of hearing health tools. With active Loud Sound Reduction and a built-in hearing test feature, AirPods Pro 2 will offer users the world’s first all-in-one hearing health experience. The software-based hearing aid feature allows users to access hearing assistance at a fraction of the cost of traditional devices.
Apple’s hearing health initiatives are expected to receive marketing authorization from global health authorities soon, with availability in over 100 countries by the end of the year.
Apple continues to push the boundaries of health technology, building on the success of its Health app, which debuted in 2014. Through its devices, the company now addresses 18 health areas, further integrating wellness tools into daily life.
This latest launch underscores Apple’s commitment to making advanced health tools more accessible through innovative technology.
