Luanda, Angola  – A devastating cholera outbreak in Angola has resulted in the deaths of 201 people, according to an announcement by the country’s Health Ministry. The rapidly spreading disease has infected a total of 5,574 individuals since the beginning of January.

The Health Ministry released a press statement on Friday detailing the alarming figures, highlighting the severity of the outbreak. Cholera cases have been reported in 13 of Angola’s 21 provinces, indicating a widespread public health crisis.

The outbreak originated in the capital province of Luanda, which has recorded the highest number of infections. The neighboring provinces of Bengo and Icolo e Bengo have also seen a significant surge in cholera cases, further straining the country’s healthcare system.

The rapid spread of the disease has raised serious concerns among health officials and international aid organizations. Efforts are underway to provide clean water, sanitation, and medical treatment to affected communities. However, the scale of the outbreak presents a significant challenge.

Cholera, a waterborne disease, thrives in areas with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water. The current outbreak underscores the urgent need for improved infrastructure and public health measures in Angola.

Health authorities are urging residents to take preventative measures, including practicing good hygiene, consuming only treated or boiled water, and seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms such as severe diarrhea and vomiting develop.
