Vijayawada, May 28, 2025:
In a surprising turn of events, the Andhra Pradesh government has withdrawn its Covid-19 advisory just three days after it was issued, despite a rise in cases in several Indian states. The advisory, released on May 24 by the Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, had urged citizens to avoid mass gatherings and crowded places, and recommended strict adherence to Covid protocols in public spaces such as railway stations, bus stations, and airports.
Background of the Advisory
The initial advisory was prompted by an uptick in Covid-19 cases in states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra. Although Andhra Pradesh itself had reported only three cases since May 12, officials had called for caution to prevent a potential outbreak. The advisory specifically recommended that elderly individuals above 60 years stay indoors, and that anyone experiencing symptoms get tested promptly.
District Medical and Health Officers (DMHOs) were instructed to restrict social gatherings, including prayer meetings, parties, and public functions, and to ensure readiness with medical supplies, including oxygen, PPE kits, and isolation rooms.
Reasons for Withdrawal
Health Commissioner G Veerapandian announced the withdrawal following a review meeting led by the Special Chief Secretary and heads of departments. The review was prompted by clarifications sought by district collectors regarding the necessity and scope of the advisory.
Commissioner Veerapandian explained, “It is observed that around 257 cases have been reported across India since May 12. Kerala reported 95 cases, Tamil Nadu 66, Maharashtra 55, Karnataka 13, Puducherry 10, and Andhra Pradesh three cases. There is no significant hospitalisation; the cases are mild and advised for home isolation only.”
He further clarified that there was no official communication or directive from the Central Government regarding new restrictions or regulations at this time. Hospital data also showed no spike in fever or severe Covid cases, and only sporadic infections were being reported.
Political Allegations
The withdrawal has sparked political controversy, with the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) alleging that the advisory was rescinded to facilitate the Telugu Desam Party’s (TDP) upcoming Mahanadu event, a major political gathering.
Continued Vigilance
Despite the withdrawal, health authorities have instructed all DMHOs to continue close monitoring of the situation, report cases promptly, and be prepared to implement medical protocols as needed.
