Ahmedabad, June 8, 2025 — Gujarat is witnessing a concerning trend in the ongoing battle against COVID-19, with more than half of the recent positive cases reported among young adults aged 25 to 50, according to state health department officials. The so-called “working age group” now accounts for the majority of the 700+ cases identified so far in the state.

Key Findings

  • Age Distribution: About 10% of cases have been reported in infants under one year old, while the number of senior citizens testing positive remains relatively low.

  • Fatalities: Three recent COVID-related deaths in Ahmedabad involved women aged 18, 20, and 47, highlighting the vulnerability of younger populations.

  • Current Situation: Hospitalisation rates remain manageable at approximately 5%, with medical facilities prepared to handle any surge in cases. “No definite pattern is emerging yet, as cases are under control and the administration is keeping a close watch on the trends,” stated a senior health official.

State and National Context

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) dashboard, Gujarat currently has 508 active cases, ranking fifth in the country after Kerala, Delhi, West Bengal, and Maharashtra. In the last 24 hours alone, 47 new cases were recorded in the state.

Across India, seven recent deaths were linked to comorbidities such as seizures, pneumonia, respiratory failure, heart and kidney disease, hypertension, septic shock, and cancer.

Symptoms and Medical Advice

Doctors note that the majority of new cases present with severe muscle pain (myalgia), high-grade fever, and diarrhoea. Loss of smell and taste, once hallmark symptoms, are now rarely reported. Dr. Maharshi Desai, an internal medicine specialist, emphasized that many patients with flu-like symptoms may have COVID-19 but are not always tested, as treatment remains largely symptom-based.

“Those with existing medical and immune-compromised conditions should be tested,” Dr. Desai advised. Dr. Vijay Maurya, former president of the Ahmedabad Family Physicians’ Association, reassured the public: “There is no need to panic or be concerned, as reporting is very low at the community level. After vaccinations and herd immunity, chances of widespread disease are low. Even cough and cold bouts often last for nearly a week.”

Public Health Response

Officials continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents—especially those with underlying health conditions—to remain vigilant and seek medical attention if symptoms develop. The state’s medical infrastructure is reportedly well-prepared to handle any potential increase in cases.
