A catastrophic Air India flight crash has left Ahmedabad in shock after a London-bound aircraft, carrying 242 passengers, plunged into the densely populated Meghani Nagar locality shortly after takeoff on Thursday, June 12, 2025. The disaster unfolded just after 1:39 pm, with the plane crashing into the doctors’ hostel and residential quarters of BJ Medical College, causing extensive damage and multiple fatalities.

Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene as the plane, flying unusually low, collided with the five-storey hostel building. The impact triggered a massive explosion, igniting both the aircraft and the structure. “The sound was like a blast, and the plane and the building caught fire,” recounted a local resident. Debris from the aircraft was scattered across the campus, with several vehicles also set ablaze. Charred bodies were recovered from the wreckage as rescue operations commenced.

Large-scale rescue efforts were launched immediately, involving the Army, Border Security Force (BSF), State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), and city police. The crash site was cordoned off, with emergency teams working to locate survivors and retrieve bodies. Local residents were among the first to respond, aiding in rescue efforts before official help arrived.

Casualty figures remain unclear, but preliminary reports indicate that several undergraduate MBBS students are feared dead or critically injured. At least five medical students were killed in the crash, and close to 50 people—mostly students and staff—sustained injuries, according to officials and medical association representatives. One survivor, found in seat 11A of the aircraft, is currently under treatment in hospital.

The UK government has expressed condolences and offered consular support to affected British nationals. Indian Railways has mobilized Vande Bharat trains to assist stranded passengers following the suspension of flights at Ahmedabad airport.

Flight tracking data identified the aircraft as a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. The cause of the crash is under investigation, with experts noting that the heavy fuel load for the international route may have intensified the post-crash fire and complicated rescue efforts.
