Ahmedabad, June 13, 2025 — A catastrophic Air India flight crash has left the BJ Medical College (BJMC) campus in Ahmedabad reeling, with significant loss of life among students, resident doctors, and their families. The incident occurred on June 12, 2025, when Air India Flight AI-171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner bound for London Gatwick, crashed just minutes after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, directly impacting the BJMC residential quarters and student hostel mess.

According to the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), four undergraduate medical students from BJMC have been confirmed dead, and six relatives of resident doctors also lost their lives in the disaster. As of now, 24 undergraduate medical students are undergoing treatment for injuries ranging from burns and fractures to psychological trauma. The total death toll from the crash, including those on board and on the ground, is estimated to be around 270, though this figure may rise as DNA identification continues.

The aircraft was carrying 242 people—including 230 passengers and 12 crew members—when it crashed, killing all but one person on board. The sole survivor, a British national, was found in seat 11A and is currently recuperating in hospital. The impact of the crash was so severe that the plane’s nose pierced through a hostel floor, causing multiple buildings to burst into flames and leaving debris scattered over a wide area.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with police, emergency services, and medical personnel working tirelessly to clear the site and provide aid. The process of identifying victims is painstaking, with many remains charred beyond recognition, necessitating DNA testing for accurate identification. Authorities have asked for patience from grieving families as the process is expected to take time.

The crash has prompted a national response, with Indian Railways deploying Vande Bharat trains to assist stranded passengers following the suspension of flight operations at Ahmedabad airport. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the crash site and surveyed the damage, while the investigation into the cause of the crash has begun with the recovery of the aircraft’s black box.
