Raipur, May 6, 2025: In a deeply distressing incident, a postgraduate student of MD Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Raipur was found dead by suicide at his residence. The young doctor allegedly took his own life due to unbearable work pressure and continuous harassment.

The incident came to light late Saturday night when the doctor failed to report to the hospital. Concerned colleagues tried repeatedly to contact him but received no response. Upon visiting his flat, they discovered him hanging from a ceiling fan, with the door locked from inside.

A suicide note recovered from his room revealed the immense stress he was under, citing extreme work pressure at the hospital as the primary reason for his tragic decision. The note also contained an apology addressed to his parents.

The police were promptly informed and have registered a case. The body was sent for postmortem examination, and an investigation is underway to ascertain all circumstances surrounding the incident.

Reactions from Medical Community

Dr. Dhruv Chauhan, National President of the IMA Junior Doctors Network, expressed grave concern over the rising instances of depression and suicides among medical professionals. He urged the National Medical Commission to conduct thorough inquiries into such cases and called for accountability from the concerned departments.

The Telangana Senior Resident Doctors Association (TSRDA) condemned the incident, highlighting continuous harassment by department faculty and unbearable work pressure as contributing factors. They demanded a swift, impartial investigation and appropriate action against those responsible at AIIMS Raipur.

Broader Context

This tragic event underscores the growing mental health crisis among medical students and professionals, exacerbated by high workloads, academic pressure, and workplace harassment. It calls for urgent systemic reforms to provide adequate psychological support, reduce work stress, and foster a healthier work environment in medical institutions across the country.
