February 4, 2025 – A team of experts from AIIMS Delhi has been deployed to investigate a mysterious illness that has claimed the lives of 17 people in Rajouri district, Jammu and Kashmir. The team, led by AIIMS Director Dr. M. Srinivas, includes specialists in toxicology and is conducting a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause of the illness.

The team began their investigation by interviewing 11 patients who are currently undergoing treatment for the illness. Their clinical histories have been documented to understand any patterns and potential links to the outbreak. On Sunday, the experts are scheduled to visit Badhaal village, where the majority of the fatalities have occurred, to gather further samples for testing. The village has been sealed, and the team will collect samples from affected homes and surrounding areas to test for any signs of toxicity.

In a significant development, no new cases have been reported from Badhaal village in recent days. The area remains under strict surveillance as authorities work to prevent further spread of the illness. Additionally, 87 families have been relocated for observation as a precautionary measure.

At the Government Medical College (GMC) Rajouri, doctors have been using Atropine as a treatment for patients showing symptoms. Further sampling and testing are planned in the coming days to identify the cause of the illness.

The situation has drawn the attention of both local authorities and national health experts, and the AIIMS team is working closely with local officials to investigate the cause and prevent any further casualties.
