Bhubaneswar, May 5, 2025:
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar has formally requested the Odisha state government to allocate at least 100 additional acres of land to facilitate the institute’s ambitious expansion plans. The proposal was put forward during a high-level meeting on Friday between AIIMS Bhubaneswar president Shailesh Kumar, executive director Ashutosh Biswas, and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
Focus on Healthcare, Education, and Research
The AIIMS delegation emphasized that the additional land is crucial for the expansion of outpatient department (OPD) and clinical care services, as well as for the creation of new Centres of Excellence on the campus. “If we get more land, we can expand the services of the outpatient department and clinical care services. We will set up centres of excellence on the campus. Land is also needed for creating residential facilities for staff. For research purposes, we may set up research centres in the coming days,” said Dr. Biswas.
He further highlighted AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s commitment to delivering quality healthcare, advancing cutting-edge research, and nurturing the next generation of medical professionals to serve the region and the nation.
Integration with Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation
In addition to the land request, AIIMS officials also urged the Chief Minister to integrate the institute under the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) area. This move, they argued, would ensure better urban services and civic support, including improved street lighting, cleanliness, garbage collection, and enhanced security through proper surveillance.
Government Support and Institutional Legacy
Chief Minister Majhi lauded the contributions of AIIMS Bhubaneswar to healthcare and medical education in Odisha and assured the institute of all necessary support for its holistic development. An official statement from AIIMS noted, “He acknowledged the institute’s role in transforming healthcare delivery and contributing significantly to both healthcare and medical education in Odisha.”
Established in 2012, AIIMS Bhubaneswar was initially envisioned as a 200-acre campus. However, the state government had allotted only about 92 acres-60 acres for the hospital and the remaining for residential facilities for students and staff. The current expansion proposal aims to bring the campus closer to its original vision and accommodate the growing needs of the institute.
Next Steps
Following the meeting with the Chief Minister, Dr. Biswas also met with Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja and Health Secretary Aswathy S to discuss further steps for the expansion and integration process.
