BHUBANESWAR: In a significant boost to healthcare infrastructure in Eastern India, Union Health Minister JP Nadda announced the establishment of the region’s first government-operated skin bank at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar. This pioneering facility is poised to transform the treatment landscape for burn victims, offering critical support and reducing dependence on centers located further afield.

During a recent visit, Minister Nadda highlighted the importance of the new skin bank, emphasizing its role in addressing the urgent needs of patients suffering from severe burns. Previously, the region relied heavily on skin banks in cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru. This new facility will collect donor skin within six hours of a person’s death, enabling timely and potentially lifesaving skin grafts for those in critical need.

The launch of the skin bank was part of a series of initiatives unveiled by the Health Minister at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, signalling the institution’s strong commitment to innovation and enhancing healthcare accessibility. Nadda also inaugurated the Central Research Laboratory, a facility designed to foster cutting-edge medical research and innovation within the institute.

Furthermore, the foundation stone was laid for a new multiutility block, intended to provide enhanced facilities for students and faculty, thereby supporting the academic and research environment.

Recognizing the importance of digital access and patient convenience, AIIMS Bhubaneswar also launched a newly designed website. The revamped online platform aims to offer updated, patient-centric information and services. Adding to the suite of new facilities, the EHS Clinic and an AMRIT Pharmacy were also inaugurated, further bolstering affordable medical access for patients and staff.

Minister Nadda also took the time to interact with the staff at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, acknowledging their dedication and underscoring the government’s commitment to nurturing healthcare excellence at the institution. These combined developments mark a significant step forward for AIIMS Bhubaneswar, positioning it as a leader in specialized medical care, research, and patient services in Eastern India.
