In a groundbreaking development, a new study has demonstrated the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in identifying early-stage metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), a silent yet pervasive health concern. By analyzing electronic health records (EHRs), AI was able to accurately detect MASLD in its early stages, offering a crucial tool in preventing the disease from progressing into more severe conditions.

MASLD, the most common chronic liver disease globally, arises from improper fat management in the liver. It has become increasingly prevalent, often linked with other health issues like obesity, Type-2 diabetes, and abnormal cholesterol levels. Despite its widespread occurrence, MASLD often goes undiagnosed because it remains asymptomatic in its early stages, making timely detection difficult.

“A significant proportion of patients who meet criteria for MASLD go undiagnosed,” said Ariana Stuart, lead author of the study and a researcher at the University of Washington. “This is concerning because delays in early diagnosis increase the likelihood of progression to advanced liver disease.”

The study, presented at The Liver Meeting hosted by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, highlights a stark gap in current diagnostic practices. Researchers analyzed EHR data from three U.S. healthcare sites using an AI algorithm. Of 834 patients meeting MASLD criteria, only 137 had an official diagnosis, leaving 83% undiagnosed despite having the condition reflected in their medical records.

These findings underscore the potential of AI to address significant gaps in traditional clinical workflows. “The study shows how AI can complement physician workflow to address the limitations of traditional clinical practice,” Stuart noted.

AI’s role in liver disease diagnosis is not new; previous research has proven its efficacy in detecting liver fibrosis, diagnosing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and even identifying liver cancer. This latest study reinforces the technology’s ability to transform diagnostic capabilities, especially for diseases like MASLD that often evade early detection.

With MASLD cases rising globally, the integration of AI into diagnostic tools could be a game-changer, offering hope for earlier interventions and better patient outcomes. As the study shows, leveraging AI in healthcare can bridge critical gaps, ensuring more patients receive the timely care they need.
