New Delhi, October 28, 2024 — Artificial Intelligence (AI) is set to transform the landscape of heart disease treatment in India through early detection and personalized therapies, say leading cardiologists. With heart disease remaining the top cause of mortality in the country, AI-driven innovations could be a game changer, according to experts who spoke at the Global Cardiology Summit ‘Cardiology Summa 2024’ in New Delhi.

Dr. Balbir Singh, Chairman of Cardiology at Max Healthcare, emphasized AI’s capacity to predict cardiac events with unprecedented precision. “AI can predict heart events, helping patients seek medical intervention earlier. It can detect subtle changes in voice and eyes that traditional methods may overlook, which has tremendous implications for early diagnosis,” said Singh. He underscored that AI’s ability to rapidly process large datasets equips clinicians with real-time insights, facilitating more effective interventions.

AI’s impact is particularly significant in India, where accessibility to healthcare is a persistent challenge in rural and remote areas. Dr. Paul A. Friedman, Chair of Cardiology at Mayo Clinic, highlighted AI’s role in bridging these gaps. “AI can streamline the reading of ECGs and other diagnostic tests, helping pinpoint disease presence quickly. It can also identify individuals who may need advanced care and predict future health risks,” Friedman said. Such applications are crucial for rural regions where timely access to cardiology experts and advanced diagnostic facilities can be limited.

Dr. Gurpreet Sandhu, Vice Chair of Cardiology and Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic, applauded India’s rapid strides in healthcare, especially in cardiology, since the COVID-19 pandemic. “Healthcare in India has expanded phenomenally over the last two decades, and particularly since the pandemic, the growth has been exponential,” Sandhu noted. “The introduction of cutting-edge technologies and the establishment of new hospitals signify a dramatic shift, indicating a bright future for cardiology in India.”

The two-day Cardiology Summa 2024 attracted prominent cardiologists, researchers, and healthcare professionals from around the world, sparking discussions on the latest innovations in cardiology care. The summit showcased advanced diagnostic tools, novel treatment methodologies, and the role of AI in enhancing patient management. With AI-driven technologies gradually being integrated into clinical practice, experts are optimistic about a future where heart disease is detected earlier and treated more effectively, potentially saving countless lives across India.
