Ahmedabad: Over the past 15 years, VS Hospital in Ahmedabad has conducted clinical trials on hundreds of patients, ranging from infants to senior citizens. These studies, listed in the Union government’s Clinical Trial Registry, India, have explored various medical treatments and devices.

Since 2007, the hospital has tested antidepressants, digestive treatments, and even graphene-coated condoms designed to enhance sexual pleasure.

According to a senior AMC official, VS Hospital conducted several medical studies between 2009 and 2019. After separating from SVP Hospital in 2019, VS Hospital no longer had its own institutional ethics committee (IEC), as SVP Hospital had one.

One of the earliest studies, dating back to 2009, examined a combination of pantoprazole and cinitapride for treating acid reflux and non-ulcer stomach pain. Other trials focused on antidepressant combinations, such as paroxetine and clonazepam, and a comparison of two mesalamine versions for ulcerative colitis patients, which was eventually discontinued.

In 2015, the hospital used cultured bone cells grown from patients’ own bodies (autologous adult live-cultured osteoblasts) to treat avascular necrosis, a condition caused by a lack of blood supply to bone tissue.

The final trial officially linked to VS Hospital before its split from SVP Hospital in 2019 was a study led by the gynecology department. This trial investigated whether graphene condoms offered more pleasure than regular latex condoms and enrolled participants between March 2019 and June 2020.

The senior AMC official also noted that clinical trials continued at VS after the split with SVP Hospital, with the most recent being a Phase 4 trial on Sporlac for pediatric diarrhea, targeting participants aged 6 months to 18 years, which took place this year.
