Mizoram finds itself on high alert once again as the dreaded African Swine Fever (ASF) rears its head, claiming the lives of 174 pigs in its latest outbreak. The disease, which has been confirmed in three districts—Aizawl, Champhai, and Saitual—has prompted swift action from authorities to contain its spread and mitigate its impact on the state’s pig farming industry.
Citing the “Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Disease in Animal Act 2009, Section 20,” the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department wasted no time in declaring various villages and localities as infected areas following the confirmation of ASF. In response, stringent measures have been implemented, including the prohibition of pig export or import from affected zones and the suspension of both the sale and slaughter of pigs, whether healthy or sick. Furthermore, deceased pigs must be properly disposed of, with burial accompanied by lime powder in designated areas.
In an effort to coordinate the response to the outbreak, Minister of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, C. Lalsawivunga, convened a crucial meeting on Tuesday, April 24th, with departmental officials at his office chamber. The gathering aimed to assess the situation comprehensively and chart out a strategic plan to combat the spread of ASF. The Minister used the opportunity to urge citizens to strictly adhere to the government’s guidelines and directives, emphasizing the collective responsibility in the fight against African Swine Fever.
The reemergence of ASF in Mizoram is not a novel occurrence. The state has grappled with the disease since its initial appearance in 2021, with subsequent outbreaks occurring intermittently. Between May 2023 and April 2024 alone, Mizoram has witnessed a staggering loss of 1,213 pigs to African Swine Fever, underscoring the persistent threat posed by the disease to the state’s pig farming sector and the livelihoods dependent on it.
As Mizoram braces itself for the challenges posed by the latest outbreak of ASF, concerted efforts are underway to contain its spread and minimize its impact on the state’s agricultural landscape. With stringent measures in place and the collective resolve of authorities and citizens alike, Mizoram remains steadfast in its determination to overcome this latest threat to its pig farming industry.
