Aizawl, Mizoram – An outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) has led to the deaths of over 3,050 pigs in four districts of Mizoram in the past month, according to officials from the state’s Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department.
The outbreak has affected 46 localities across Siaha, Lawngtlai, Lunglei, and Mamit districts, which have been declared ASF-infected zones. Authorities have culled approximately 1,000 pigs in these districts in an effort to control the spread of the disease.
Siaha district is the most severely impacted, with a total of 1,651 pig deaths. State officials have indicated that the hot and humid weather conditions are contributing to the virus’s spread.
Mizoram has faced significant economic losses due to ASF in recent years. In 2024, the state lost Rs 336.49 crore, with 15,000 pigs dying and nearly 24,200 being culled. The crisis continues a troubling trend from previous years, with 1,139 pigs and piglets lost in 2023, 12,800 in 2022, and 33,417 in 2021.
The state government has provided compensation to over 100 families who have lost pigs due to the disease, according to an official from the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department.
