Hyderabad, July 10, 2025 — At least five people have lost their lives and dozens have been hospitalized in Hyderabad after consuming adulterated toddy, sparking urgent investigations and a swift response from authorities. The incidents, which occurred across multiple neighborhoods including Kukatpally and Balanagar, have raised serious concerns about the safety and regulation of locally sold toddy.
According to officials, the affected individuals consumed toddy from various shops between July 6 and July 8. Many began experiencing symptoms of acute gastroenteritis, including severe vomiting and diarrhea, and were admitted to local hospitals on Tuesday night. The number of hospitalizations quickly rose, with at least 28 people, including 12 women, receiving treatment at different medical facilities. Several patients remain in critical condition, with some requiring intensive care and dialysis at the state-run Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS).
Authorities have acted promptly: police and excise officials have registered cases, sealed the implicated toddy shops, and apprehended five suspects in connection with the incident. Samples of the toddy and biological samples from the patients have been sent for chemical and forensic analysis to determine the exact cause and nature of the contamination. The licenses of the shops involved are likely to be canceled pending the results of these investigations.
Telangana Minister for Excise and Prohibition, Jupally Krishna Rao, visited the hospitalized victims and assured the public that stern action would be taken against those responsible. He emphasized that measures are being put in place to prevent such tragedies in the future. Health Minister C Damodar Rajanarasimha has also directed health authorities to ensure the best possible care for those affected and to closely monitor the situation.
The incident has sparked widespread concern over the safety standards of toddy sold in Hyderabad and has prompted calls for stricter enforcement and quality checks.
“As all the affected persons were having common symptoms, consumption of adulterated toddy is suspected to be the cause, as per preliminary information,” Minister Rao stated.
