New Delhi, June 6, 2025 — In a landmark transformation for the Indian healthcare landscape, flagship government initiatives such as the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) and the Jan Aushadhi Kendras under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) have significantly improved access to affordable healthcare for the country’s middle class over the past eleven years, according to an official government statement.

Expanding Reach and Impact

The AB-PMJAY, now recognized as one of the world’s largest publicly funded health assurance schemes, has issued more than 41 crore Ayushman Cards across 33 States and Union Territories as of May 30, 2025. The scheme has facilitated over 8.59 crore hospital admissions, amounting to Rs 1,19,858 crore in value, ensuring that millions receive secondary and tertiary care without the burden of catastrophic health expenditures.

Affordable Medicines for All

The Jan Aushadhi Kendras, which have grown from just 80 outlets in 2014 to 16,469 by May 2025, have revolutionized the availability of essential medicines. These centers offer medicines at 50 to 80 percent lower prices compared to branded alternatives, with quality assured through WHO-GMP certified suppliers. Serving an estimated 10 to 12 lakh people daily, these outlets have collectively saved Indian families over Rs 38,000 crore in the last eleven years.

The Kendras now stock a wide range of 2,110 medicines, including treatments for chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart conditions, and 315 surgical products. This comprehensive offering has helped reduce the financial strain on millions, especially within the middle class.

Digital Backbone and Broader Benefits

A robust digital infrastructure underpins both schemes, streamlining enrolment, access, and tracking for beneficiaries. The government statement highlights that this digital push has made it easier than ever for citizens to benefit from free hospitalisation for senior citizens, low-cost medicines, and timely medical interventions.

The reforms are part of a broader effort to uplift the middle class, addressing not just healthcare but also financial security, housing, and skill development.

Looking Ahead

As India continues to evolve its healthcare system, these initiatives stand out as examples of how targeted public policies and digital innovation can deliver tangible benefits to millions. With ongoing government commitment, the middle class is expected to see further improvements in healthcare affordability and accessibility in the years to come.
