Bengaluru: The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) continues its efforts to break the stigma surrounding mental health with its pioneering ‘Mental Health Santhe’ campaign. The initiative, designed to promote awareness and suicide prevention, plays a crucial role in improving access to mental healthcare across India.

A recent paper by NIMHANS researchers, published in the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine, has highlighted the success of this anti-stigma campaign. Launched two years ago, the Mental Health Santhe has significantly contributed to spreading awareness about mental health issues, dispelling misconceptions, and narrowing the treatment gap in mental healthcare. The campaign offers information on mental health interventions, treatment resources, and educational opportunities to support individuals in need.

According to Dr. K.S. Meena, head of the Department of Mental Health Education at NIMHANS, the campaign’s upcoming phase will integrate enhanced statistical methodologies to better evaluate its impact on mental health awareness and help-seeking behaviors. “Understanding behavioral change at the community level is crucial, and our refined approach will provide more precise insights into the effectiveness of our efforts,” said Dr. Meena.

India’s mental health treatment gap remains alarmingly high. The National Mental Health Survey has reported a staggering 83.4% treatment gap, with stigma, societal discrimination, and lack of awareness being the primary barriers preventing people from seeking mental health support. The Mental Health Santhe campaign aims to bridge this gap by fostering community engagement and integrating culturally relevant approaches to mental health advocacy.

By leveraging education, support services, and multidisciplinary collaborations, Mental Health Santhe is helping initiate conversations about mental health, encourage help-seeking behaviors, and ensure that mental well-being becomes a national priority. Through continuous public engagement and policy advocacy, NIMHANS aims to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for individuals struggling with mental health issues.
