Phnom Penh, Feb 26: Cambodia has reported its second fatality from the H5N1 avian influenza this year, as a two-year-and-seven-month-old boy from Prey Veng province succumbed to the virus, the Ministry of Health confirmed on Tuesday.

A laboratory test conducted by the National Institute of Public Health confirmed that the child had tested positive for H5N1. Despite intensive medical intervention, the boy passed away on Tuesday after being admitted to the hospital in a severe condition with symptoms including fever, cough, and difficulty breathing.

The toddler, a resident of Ta Ngak village in Romchek commune, lived near a family-run poultry farm. Health officials reported that approximately 15 chickens had recently died in the area, with others displaying symptoms of illness. The ministry noted that the boy frequently played and slept beneath his family’s stilt house, which was in close proximity to the chicken coop.

Authorities are investigating the source of the infection and closely monitoring individuals who had contact with the child to prevent further spread.

H5N1 avian influenza is primarily transmitted among infected poultry but can occasionally infect humans. Symptoms often include fever, cough, runny nose, and severe respiratory distress. The Ministry of Health has urged the public to avoid consuming sick or dead poultry and to maintain caution, as the virus remains a significant health threat.

Since 2003, Cambodia has recorded 74 human cases of H5N1, with 45 fatalities. While human infections are rare, they often result in severe illness with a high mortality rate. Most cases are linked to close contact with infected birds or contaminated environments, with no evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission.
