Anuppur, Madhya Pradesh: Nearly 100 female students of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Amarkantak, fell ill after consuming “contaminated” food in their hostel mess, officials confirmed on Tuesday. Fortunately, none of the affected students are in critical condition.
Resident doctors at the university’s medical facility promptly examined the students and provided initial treatment. Anuppur District Magistrate Harshal Pancholi informed the media that a team, including the Chief Medical Officer and senior administrative officials, visited the university campus to investigate the matter. Food samples were collected for testing to determine any potential contamination, and hostel staff members were questioned as part of the ongoing probe.
According to officials, the students primarily complained of indigestion and stomach-related discomfort. Some students requiring further medical attention were sent to the university’s medical facility. Authorities have assured that the situation is under control, with continuous monitoring by medical professionals.
Possible Cause of Illness
A source within the university revealed that the students were served vegetable biryani on Sunday, and it was reportedly served again the following day upon request. The caterer, instead of preparing a fresh batch, allegedly re-served the same biryani, leading to foodborne illnesses among several female students. Symptoms such as stomach aches, headaches, and vomiting were reported. However, it was noted that no male students who consumed the same food reported similar health issues.
As of now, no students have been referred to external medical facilities, and the condition of the affected individuals is stable. Officials suspect that serving stale food might have caused the incident, though further lab results are awaited to confirm the exact cause.
University’s Response and Infrastructure
The university, which has five hostels—three for boys and two for girls—operates with separate dining areas but a common kitchen. The administration has assured that strict measures will be taken to ensure food safety and prevent such incidents in the future.
The Indira Gandhi National Tribal University was established under the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Act, 2007, and began operations in July 2008. The institution, funded by the Central government through the University Grants Commission (UGC), provides educational and research facilities in various aspects of tribal culture, including traditions, languages, medicinal systems, and forest-based economic activities.
