Health experts are raising alarms about an unexpected rise in hemorrhoids and anal fistulas, linking the trend to prolonged mobile phone use while sitting on the toilet. This habit, compounded by sedentary lifestyles and poor dietary choices, is leading to an increase in painful rectal conditions that often require medical intervention.
Dr. Jignesh Gandhi and Dr. Ravi Ranjan, along with other specialists, addressed these concerns at ESIC Hospital’s 74th foundation day, revealing that over 500 cases are recorded annually. They identified chronic constipation and extended toilet time as primary culprits and emphasized the urgent need for lifestyle changes to curb these health issues.
Dr. Ranjan also highlighted the promising potential of minimally invasive treatments such as the Rafaelo procedure, a radiofrequency ablation technique approved by the US FDA and widely used in the UK. This advanced treatment could revolutionize patient care, offering a quicker and less painful recovery compared to traditional surgical methods. However, awareness remains low among Indian surgeons, prompting experts to advocate for broader adoption to alleviate hospital burdens and enhance patient outcomes.
As awareness grows, healthcare professionals urge individuals to adopt better bowel habits, such as limiting toilet time, avoiding prolonged mobile phone use in the restroom, maintaining a fiber-rich diet, and staying physically active to reduce the risk of rectal disorders.
