Pune, India — A 37-year-old driver from Pune has succumbed to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), raising the regional death toll to seven. Despite receiving intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) treatment, his condition deteriorated, ultimately leading to his demise.

According to civic health officials, the patient initially sought medical attention in Pune after experiencing weakness in his lower limbs. His family later transferred him to Nipani, Karnataka, and then to Sangli for further treatment. While undergoing IVIg therapy in Sangli, his health continued to decline. On February 5, against medical advice, he was readmitted to Kamala Nehru Hospital in Pune, where he tragically passed away.

The rising number of GBS-related deaths in the region has raised concerns among health officials. Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a rare neurological disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness, paralysis, and in severe cases, death. While the exact cause of the outbreak remains under investigation, experts urge early diagnosis and timely medical intervention to improve patient outcomes.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have advised individuals experiencing symptoms such as muscle weakness, tingling sensations, or difficulty breathing to seek immediate medical care.
