Kolkata, February 12 — More than six months after the tragic rape and murder of a young doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, her parents continue their relentless pursuit of justice, refusing to be silenced despite legal setbacks.

On February 9, the family marked what would have been their daughter’s 32nd birthday in sorrow and protest. In an interview with The Wire, the grieving mother recalled how the day felt empty without her daughter’s favorite kheer.

“This year, she wasn’t here for her favorite kheer. We will stay on the streets until those who took her from us are punished,” she declared, vowing to continue the fight.

Legal Battle and Allegations of Political Interference

The parents’ demand for a reinvestigation and a faster trial was dismissed by the Supreme Court, a ruling they claim was influenced by political pressure. The decision has ignited widespread protests across West Bengal, with demonstrators calling for greater accountability and transparency in the handling of the case.

Despite their numerous appeals, the family alleges that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) failed to conduct a thorough probe. While one civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, was convicted, two of the accused have been granted bail. The family insists that several others involved in the crime have yet to be properly investigated.

Their lawyer, Karuna Nandy, sought an urgent hearing before the Supreme Court, citing a “lack of oversight” in the CBI’s investigation. However, Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna ruled that the matter did not warrant urgency, scheduling the next hearing for March 17.

Statewide Protests Gain Momentum

The grief-stricken parents found solace in the support of thousands who participated in silent marches, health camps, and candlelight vigils across the state on February 9, standing in solidarity with their demand for justice.

Dr. Subarna Goswami, a leader in the doctors’ movement, expressed deep frustration over what she believes is political interference.

“We respect the Supreme Court’s verdict, but it’s clear that a powerful political group is influencing the process. We won’t give up. From Kolkata to the Bangladesh border, lakhs of people joined protests on Sunday. This has only strengthened our resolve,” she said.

Authorities Block Health Camp

Tensions escalated when the family attempted to hold a free health camp in their daughter’s childhood neighborhood, an event meant to honor her legacy of service. Authorities reportedly blocked the initiative by canceling permissions at the last moment. However, local residents ensured that the camp was relocated and carried out successfully.

The fight for justice for the young doctor continues, with her parents and supporters determined to seek accountability in a case that has shaken the conscience of the nation.
