Noida, India – The need for academia-industry collaboration to drive innovation and economic growth in India was emphasized by Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director General, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), during an Annual Convention on the healthcare sector held on Tuesday.

Speaking at the event organized by BIS under the Department of Consumer Affairs at its National Institute of Training for Standardisation, Noida, Tiwari highlighted the significance of strengthening India’s manufacturing base in the healthcare sector. He also underscored BIS’s various initiatives, including orientation programs in academic institutions and annual conventions across multiple disciplines.

Tiwari urged experts to actively participate in BIS technical committees, engage in research and development projects, and incorporate standards into engineering curricula to enhance learning. He pointed out the challenges posed by a limited manufacturing base and restricted research capabilities and called for efforts to align with the Prime Minister’s vision of Indian standards gaining global recognition.

BIS aims to enhance the usability of Indian Standards not just for industries and consumer groups but also for academicians and researchers. By engaging with academic institutions, BIS hopes to boost awareness of standards within the research community and promote their integration into education and innovation.

“Standards created must not only be scientifically advanced but also timely as per the needs,” said Chandan Bahl, Scientist-G and Deputy Director General (International Relations) at BIS. He emphasized the role of academia and research organizations as crucial stakeholders with up-to-date technical expertise.

The convention saw the participation of 36 representatives from 28 academic and research institutions. It aimed to generate awareness about standardization in the healthcare and medical device sectors while exploring collaborative opportunities with academia and research bodies to strengthen BIS’s standardization activities in these fields.
