Telangana, February 2025 – A rare and potentially life-threatening neurological disorder, Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), has been confirmed in a woman from Siddipet district, marking the first reported case of the condition in Telangana. This development has come at a time when an outbreak of GBS is being reported in Pune and nearby regions, raising alarm across the state.

The 25-year-old patient, who is currently under intensive care at KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad, is being supported by a ventilator. According to Dr. Praveen Kumar Yada, the Consultant Neurologist overseeing her care, the patient has no travel history to areas already affected by the outbreak. Despite this, her condition remains severe, even without a familial history of GBS, which is known for its unpredictable nature.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nervous system, leading to symptoms such as muscle weakness, paralysis, and in some severe cases, respiratory failure. The condition appears to be linked to Campylobacter jejuni, a bacterium commonly found in contaminated water and food, adding to concerns about potential outbreaks in the region.

Local authorities, however, are reportedly unaware of this particular case, indicating a possible gap in the monitoring and reporting of such rare diseases. Public health experts are calling for heightened surveillance and more rigorous investigation into possible sources of contamination.

As the state grapples with this isolated case, the medical community and authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further spread and ensure appropriate care for any future cases.
