Mumbai, January 31 – Maharashtra has reported its second suspected fatality due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) following the death of a 56-year-old woman from Sinhagad Road, Pune. The woman, who was also battling oral cancer, succumbed to respiratory failure with sepsis on Tuesday.

According to officials, the total number of suspected GBS cases in the state has risen to 127. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) confirmed that the deceased had initially complained of weakness and was admitted to a local hospital on January 15 before being referred to Sassoon General Hospital for further treatment.

This comes after the first suspected GBS-related death was recorded on January 25, when a 40-year-old man from Pune’s Dhayari area passed away in Solapur. Health authorities have sent his medical reports for further analysis to confirm if GBS was the cause.

Government Response and Precautionary Measures

The state’s Public Health Department has reported that of the 127 suspected cases, 72 have been diagnosed with GBS. The distribution of these cases includes:

  • Pune Municipal Corporation: 13 cases
  • Newly added villages in PMC area: 73 cases
  • Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation: 13 cases
  • Pune rural and other districts: 9 cases each
  • 20 patients are currently on ventilator support

In response, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has urged citizens not to panic and has instructed the health administration to ensure proper treatment facilities in government hospitals. The treatment for GBS is covered under the state’s health insurance scheme, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has directed that patients in Pune be treated at Kamla Nehru Hospital (PMC) and Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation). Additionally, State Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar clarified that GBS is a rare, non-contagious disease caused by decreased immunity.

Enhanced Monitoring and SOP Implementation

State Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif has instructed officials to strictly follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to manage the situation. He emphasized that daily updates on GBS patients must be submitted to the Commissioner of Medical Education and Research Department.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, and further reviews are being conducted to ensure timely medical intervention. The state government reassures citizens that all necessary measures are being taken to address the outbreak effectively.
