Kolkata, Jan 30: Confusion and concern have arisen over the death of a 10-year-old minor from Jagatdal in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, reportedly due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). The incident comes just a day after the West Bengal Health Department reassured the public that there is no reason to panic regarding the disease, as it is neither new nor showing signs of fresh outbreaks since December last year.

Despite claims that the minor succumbed to GBS on Wednesday, no official confirmation has been provided by either the state Health Department or the hospital where the child was admitted. This lack of clarity has fueled public apprehension.

Adding to the uncertainty, a similar death of a 17-year-old minor from Amdanga in the same district was reported on Tuesday, also allegedly due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome. However, the hospital authorities refrained from directly attributing the death to GBS, instead stating that the immediate cause was septic shock and myocarditis, with the possibility of Guillain-Barré Syndrome being an underlying factor.

West Bengal Health Secretary Narayan Swarup Nigam issued a statement on Tuesday asserting that Guillain-Barré Syndrome is not a new phenomenon in the state or the country. He emphasized that sporadic cases have been reported in the past and reassured that there have been no fresh cases since December 2024. Furthermore, he cited confirmation from the World Health Organization (WHO) to back the claim that the situation is under control and does not warrant panic.

Despite these reassurances, the state Health Department has assured continuous monitoring of the situation. Medical teams remain vigilant, and authorities are closely observing any new developments related to the syndrome.

Disclaimer: This article is based on available reports and statements from relevant authorities. Official confirmation on the cause of death in both cases is still pending. Readers are advised to rely on verified medical sources and official government announcements for the latest updates on Guillain-Barré Syndrome.
