Hyderabad, Telangana – In a major move to curb illegal organ trade and ensure ethical medical practices, the Telangana Medical Council (TGMC) has announced plans to audit all private hospitals statewide following the unearthing of an illegal kidney transplant racket at a Saroornagar hospital.

The racket came to light after the arrest of nine individuals connected to unauthorized kidney transplants at Alakananda Hospital in Saroornagar. TGMC Vice-Chairman Dr. Srinivas Gundagani confirmed that the hospital had no approval for organ transplants and had circumvented the state’s official organ donation program, Jeevandan.

Following the discovery, TGMC issued notices to the hospital and is planning comprehensive audits of organ transplant procedures at all private and corporate medical facilities. These audits aim to ensure compliance with transplant regulations and prevent the illegal trade of human organs.

Dr. Venkateswarlu, District Medical Officer, also noted that Alakananda Hospital lacked the necessary infrastructure to perform kidney transplants. Authorities suspect that the surgeries may have been carried out elsewhere as part of a well-organized interstate operation. The Telangana Medical Council has warned that stringent penalties will be enforced for anyone found guilty of violating the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994.

This action is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal organ trade and ensure that medical ethics are upheld in healthcare facilities.
