Pune, Maharashtra: In response to an alarming rise in Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has sent a seven-member expert team to assist public health efforts in the region. GBS is a rare but serious nerve disorder that can lead to paralysis, and Pune has reported 111 cases so far, with 17 patients currently on ventilators.

The high-level team, comprising experts from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), NIMHANS Bengaluru, the Regional Office of Health and Family Welfare, and the National Institute for Virology (NIV), Pune, aims to collaborate with state health authorities to manage and mitigate the outbreak.

This deployment adds to the support already being provided by three experts from NIV, Pune. The team will assess the situation, strengthen public health interventions, and recommend measures to curb the spread of GBS in the affected areas.

Maharashtra Health Minister Prakash Abitkar expressed gratitude for the Centre’s swift response, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts to manage the crisis.
