Rajouri, J&K – Four more individuals, including three sisters, have been admitted to the hospital in Rajouri district, Jammu and Kashmir, exhibiting symptoms of a mysterious disease that has already claimed 17 lives in the region.

The three sisters from Budhaal village, where the majority of deaths have occurred, were hospitalized on Wednesday after their condition deteriorated. They are being transported to Jammu city for specialized treatment.

In response to the ongoing health crisis, authorities declared Budhaal village a containment zone under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) Act. This decision comes after investigations failed to pinpoint the cause of the deaths, which have been reported since December 8, 2024.

As part of the containment measures, affected families have been isolated, and public gatherings are prohibited within the designated zones. The administration has also implemented a system to ensure the provision of meals to residents within the containment area.

Despite extensive testing at various laboratories across the country, the cause of the deaths remains elusive. While some toxins have been detected in samples, viral and bacterial infections have been ruled out.

J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited the village on Tuesday, offering condolences to the bereaved families and assuring them that the cause of the deaths would be determined soon. An inter-ministerial team, constituted under the direction of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, is currently investigating the situation in the village.

The Health Department has conducted screenings on over 3,500 individuals, including residents of Budhaal and nearby villages, but no conclusive evidence of viral or bacterial infections has been found.

The situation in Rajouri remains concerning, and authorities are working diligently to identify the cause of the mysterious disease and implement appropriate measures to prevent further fatalities.
