Bengaluru is set to become the epicenter of infectious disease research in South India with the establishment of the region’s first dedicated Infectious Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory. The Bangalore Medical College & Research Institute (BMC&RI) has been chosen to host this pioneering facility by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The announcement was made on Friday by Karnataka’s Minister for Medical Education, Sharan Prakash Patil.
The new lab is poised to strengthen the region’s research and diagnostic capabilities, ensuring that samples no longer need to be sent to other states for analysis. This will not only expedite testing but also contribute to the state’s self-reliance in addressing infectious disease outbreaks and improving public health responses.
In his address, Minister Patil highlighted that the decision to establish the lab at BMC&RI was driven by the institute’s strong track record of credible research and its commitment to serving diverse communities. The state-of-the-art laboratory will allow for enhanced research into infectious diseases, which have been a significant challenge for public health in the region.
This development is part of a broader effort to improve Karnataka’s healthcare infrastructure. In another significant move, Minister Patil also inaugurated the Moniz Cath Lab Suite at the Victoria Hospital’s Trauma & Emergency Care Centre. The new facility is equipped with an advanced DSA Cath Lab and comfortable patient accommodation areas designed to enhance care during and after procedures.
The establishment of the Infectious Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory marks a major step forward in Bengaluru’s role as a leader in medical research and healthcare innovation in South India.
