As Australians kickstart their New Year health resolutions, new research from CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, is offering promising insights into the power of personalized goal-setting for achieving long-term weight loss success.
A comprehensive analysis of over 22,000 participants in the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet has revealed that while many participants set ambitious goals (often around 20 kg) for themselves at the start of the program, only 3% were able to achieve such drastic targets within 12 weeks. However, those who adopted personalized, AI-driven weight-loss goals achieved far greater success.
The research found that participants who followed a tailored weight-loss target—generated by an AI tool integrated into the program—had the highest success rates. These members not only experienced early weight loss but also maintained better long-term results. Specifically, 47% of participants who followed their customized goals shed between 7 and 11 kg over 12 weeks.
Dr. Gilly Hendrie, CSIRO Research Scientist, emphasized the importance of setting realistic and achievable goals when embarking on a weight-loss journey.
“Early successes are crucial in building momentum,” Dr. Hendrie said. “When individuals set goals that are both realistic and personalized to their specific needs, they are more motivated to stick to their plan and reach their ultimate milestones.”
The Power of Stretch Goals
The research also highlighted the value of “stretch goals”—deliberately challenging targets designed to push individuals slightly beyond their comfort zones. Participants who pursued stretch goals, also personalized by the CSIRO program, saw impressive results both in the short-term and long-term.
At the 12-week mark, those who achieved stretch goals experienced substantial weight loss, and this success carried over into the following months. In fact, 9 out of 10 participants who met their stretch goals lost a clinically significant 5% or more of their starting body weight by the 12-month mark.
Stretch goals were particularly effective for individuals with more weight to lose. Among participants categorized as obese, 20% reached their stretch goal, losing an average of 12 kg in the first 12 weeks—4 kg more than those who met their personalized goals.
“Stretch goals provide that extra push needed to unlock greater potential,” Dr. Hendrie explained. “These goals are not just about rapid weight loss—they help participants establish a rhythm of achievement, leading to lasting habits and success.”
New AI Tool: My Journey
Building on these findings, CSIRO has introduced My Journey, an advanced AI tool designed to enhance Australians’ ability to set, track, and achieve personalized weight-loss goals. With real-time guidance, My Journey ensures that each individual receives support tailored to their unique needs, setting them up for success in their weight-loss journey.
“With My Journey, you can trust that your goals will be personalized to your specific circumstances, giving you the best chance to succeed,” Dr. Hendrie said. “Whether you’re starting fresh this January or continuing to build on past progress, the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet and My Journey offer the tools and confidence necessary to achieve lasting health goals.”
As Australians set their sights on healthier lifestyles in 2025, the personalized approach championed by CSIRO is proving to be a key strategy for sustainable weight loss and better long-term health outcomes.
