Ashiya, Japan (AP) – Tomiko Itooka, a Japanese woman celebrated as the world’s oldest person, passed away at the age of 116, city officials announced on Saturday. She died on December 29 at a care home in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, according to Yoshitsugu Nagata, an official overseeing elderly care policies.

Born on May 23, 1908, in Osaka, Japan, Itooka witnessed over a century of history and was known for her love of bananas and a yogurt-flavored Japanese drink called Calpis. Her longevity earned her recognition from Guinness World Records last year, following the death of 117-year-old Maria Branyas of Spain. Upon learning she was officially the oldest person alive, Itooka modestly responded, “Thank you.”

A Life Full of Vitality

Itooka led an active life marked by resilience and enthusiasm. In her youth, she excelled as a volleyball player and later accomplished the rare feat of climbing Mount Ontake—Japan’s second-highest volcano—twice.

At the age of 20, she married and went on to have two daughters and two sons. During World War II, she managed the office of her husband’s textile factory, balancing work and family amid challenging times. After her husband passed away in 1979, Itooka chose to live independently in Nara for several decades.

Even in her later years, her sprightly spirit remained a hallmark of her personality. On her 116th birthday last year, Itooka celebrated with flowers, a cake, and a congratulatory card from the mayor of Ashiya.

Remembered by Family and Friends

Itooka is survived by one son, one daughter, and five grandchildren. A private funeral service attended by family and friends honored her remarkable life.

The World’s New Oldest Person

According to the Gerontology Research Group, the title of the world’s oldest person now belongs to Inah Canabarro Lucas, a 116-year-old Brazilian nun born just 16 days after Itooka.

Tomiko Itooka’s life serves as a testament to resilience, joy, and the enduring human spirit. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
