31 December 2024 marks five years since the World Health Organization (WHO) first became aware of cases of “viral pneumonia” in Wuhan, China. On that day in 2019, WHO’s Country Office in China identified a media statement from the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission that signaled the beginning of what would become a global health crisis: the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Rapid Global Response

As the new year of 2020 dawned, WHO activated its emergency systems on 1 January and alerted the global community on 4 January. In a matter of weeks, comprehensive guidance for countries was released, and by mid-January, the blueprint for the first SARS-CoV-2 laboratory test was developed. These early actions underscored WHO’s commitment to transparency, global cooperation, and science-driven solutions.

Throughout the pandemic, WHO worked tirelessly to convene experts, collaborate with ministries of health, analyze data, and provide timely updates to inform and protect populations worldwide. This collective effort not only helped to coordinate a global response but also facilitated the development of life-saving vaccines, treatments, and preventive measures in record time.

Honoring the Lives Impacted

Five years on, the world reflects on the profound impact of COVID-19. Millions of lives were lost, countless individuals continue to face the challenges of long COVID, and health workers across the globe made extraordinary sacrifices to care for those affected. This anniversary serves as a moment to honor their resilience and express gratitude to those who worked tirelessly to save lives.

Learning from the Past, Preparing for the Future

While the world has made strides in understanding and managing pandemics, WHO continues to emphasize the need for transparency and international cooperation. A key unresolved question remains the origins of COVID-19. WHO has reiterated its call for China to share critical data and provide access for a comprehensive investigation. Understanding the origins is not only a scientific necessity but also a moral imperative to prevent future pandemics.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus recently posed an essential question: “Is the world better prepared for the next pandemic than we were for COVID-19?” The answer lies in ongoing global efforts to strengthen health systems, improve surveillance, and foster international collaboration.

Building a Healthier Tomorrow

As we mark this milestone, it is crucial to recognize the lessons learned and commit to building a healthier, more resilient world. The pandemic revealed both the vulnerabilities and strengths of global health systems, offering invaluable insights to guide future responses.

Five years after COVID-19 began to reshape our world, the focus must remain on unity, science, and preparedness to safeguard humanity against future health emergencies. The journey forward requires honoring the past while looking ahead with resolve and determination.
