New Delhi, December 24: The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, graced the 6th Convocation Ceremony of Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital, highlighting the critical role of the medical profession in society. The event also saw the participation of Union Health Minister Shri J P Nadda and other distinguished guests.
Speaking at the convocation, the President emphasized the unique nature of the medical profession, which she described as a “noble cause of treating and curing people of diseases and saving lives.” She commended the dedication of doctors who serve as a healing touch for humanity and bear the immense responsibility of safeguarding people’s health.
“It is a matter of pride that Safdarjung Hospital is among the top 20 medical institutes in the country as per the latest NIRF rankings,” the President remarked. Highlighting the hospital’s daily footfall of over 10,000 patients, she lauded its commitment to accessible and high-quality healthcare.
The President also encouraged the medical community to promote organ donation as a noble and life-saving cause. Reflecting on the nation’s healthcare advancements over the last decade, she mentioned the establishment of new AIIMS, the doubling of postgraduate seats, and the introduction of innovative healthcare programs such as the Ayushman Vay Vandana scheme, which caters to the elderly population.
A total of 403 degrees were conferred upon students from MBBS, MD, MS, DM, and MCh programs during the ceremony. The President awarded medals to outstanding students, and the institution’s Annual Report was also released.
Shri J P Nadda, in his address, congratulated the graduating students and their families, praising the institute’s achievements. “This celebratory occasion also marks recognition for the numerous achievements made by the students of VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, which are amongst the most prestigious medical institutes in the country,” he said.
He further reminded the young graduates that being a doctor goes beyond curing diseases; it involves a deep understanding of humanity. He encouraged them to uphold values of excellence, empathy, and service throughout their careers.
A Legacy of Excellence
Founded in 1942 during World War II as a base hospital, Safdarjung Hospital has grown into one of Asia’s largest tertiary-level healthcare institutions. With over 3,000 beds and an annual outpatient attendance exceeding 25 lakh patients, the hospital remains a cornerstone of healthcare in India. Its state-of-the-art facilities include robotic surgery, MRI angiography, and advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services across numerous specialties.
Established in 2001, VMMC is affiliated with Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University and has rapidly emerged as a premier medical college. It offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and super-specialty programs.
The convocation ceremony was attended by senior officials, faculty, students, and staff of VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, along with prominent dignitaries, including Smt. Roli Singh, Additional Secretary, Health Ministry, and Prof. Geetika Khanna, Principal, VMMC.
