Chennai, India – In a historic achievement, the National Institute of Siddha (NIS) has set a Guinness World Record for conducting Varmam therapy on 567 individuals simultaneously. The landmark event, held at the NIS campus in Tambaram, Chennai, underscores the growing prominence of Siddha medicine and its therapeutic techniques in modern healthcare.

The event saw 567 trained Varmanis (Varmam healers) providing therapy to 567 individuals, showcasing the efficiency and appeal of this non-invasive, drug-free treatment. Varmam therapy, an integral part of Siddha medicine, is known for its ability to address musculoskeletal pain, neurological disorders, and other chronic conditions through precise manipulation of vital energy points in the body.

Union Minister of Ayush (Independent Charge), Shri Prataprao Jadhav, lauded the efforts of NIS in a written message, commending the institute for its contribution to promoting traditional healing systems.

A Milestone for Siddha Medicine

The Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, congratulated the NIS team, emphasizing the significance of the event. “This type of event is not just about achieving an award; it’s about raising awareness among the new generation and helping them understand the science and value behind such wonderful practices,” he said. He highlighted the increasing global and domestic attention Siddha medicine has garnered in recent years, attributing this progress to sustained efforts by institutions like NIS.

Prof. Dr. R. Meenakumari, Director of the National Institute of Siddha, expressed pride in the achievement. She stated, “Siddha Varmam therapy is a very unique, non-invasive, cost-effective, and non-pharmacological form of treatment. It is used in treating complicated neurological diseases, orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions, autism spectrum disorders, and cerebral palsy in children. This Guinness World Record will bring much-needed attention to the Siddha system of medicine globally and within India.”

Promoting Traditional Healing

The Guinness World Record event is part of NIS’s broader mission to promote the benefits of Siddha medicine and Varmam therapy on a global scale. Through initiatives like these, the institute aims to position traditional healing practices as complementary solutions to modern medicine.

Varmam therapy, rooted in the ancient Siddha system, is often misunderstood as part of Varmakalai, a martial art. However, in therapeutic applications, it is a scientifically grounded practice with proven benefits for conditions like stroke, arthritis, and trauma-related injuries.

As the National Institute of Siddha celebrates this historic milestone, the achievement not only brings global recognition to Siddha medicine but also reinforces the importance of preserving and promoting India’s traditional healing practices. This record-breaking event marks a new chapter in integrating ancient wisdom with contemporary healthcare needs.
