Agartala, Tripura – A private multi-specialty hospital in Agartala, ILS Hospital, has suspended medical treatment for patients from Bangladesh following protests fueled by accusations of disrespect towards the Indian national flag and concerns about the treatment of Hindus in Bangladesh.

The decision, made on Saturday, has garnered significant attention. ILS Hospital, known for its affordable treatment and proximity to Bangladesh, has long been a popular destination for patients from the neighboring country. However, the hospital’s Chief Operating Officer, Gautam Hazarika, confirmed the suspension of services, stating, “We extend full support to the demand of suspension of treatment to people from Bangladesh at our health facility.” In addition, he noted that help desks at the Akhaura check post and the hospital itself have been closed.

The protests, which erupted in Agartala, were driven by allegations that Bangladeshi nationals had disrespected the Indian national flag. Protesters also voiced concerns over the treatment of religious minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh. One protestor stated, “Disrespect to the Indian national flag and attacks on minorities are totally unacceptable,” reflecting the heightened tension between the two neighboring countries.

The decision to suspend treatment in Agartala follows a similar move by JN Ray Hospital in Kolkata, where officials also cited the perceived insults to the Indian flag and the alleged mistreatment of Hindus in Bangladesh as the driving factors behind their decision. Subhranshu Bhakt, an official at the Kolkata hospital, called for other medical facilities to follow suit, urging them to protest against the alleged atrocities on minorities in Bangladesh. Bhakt also reminded the public of India’s historic role in supporting Bangladesh’s independence.

The suspension of treatment for Bangladeshi nationals in both Agartala and Kolkata comes at a time of heightened political and social tensions between India and Bangladesh, with protests and public outcry over the alleged treatment of Hindus in Bangladesh contributing to the growing strain. The situation remains fluid, with authorities in both countries yet to comment on the escalating protests.
