In a landmark decision aimed at safeguarding public health and ensuring sustainable farming practices, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has banned the use of certain antibiotics in animal food products. The regulation, which came into effect in October, applies to the production of meat, milk, eggs, poultry, and aquaculture products. This move is expected to play a significant role in curbing antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a growing global health crisis.

India’s move aligns with similar bans implemented in countries such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore, where concerns about AMR and food safety have prompted stricter regulations. Notably, India has committed to reducing antimicrobial use in animal production by 30–50% by 2030, reflecting its dedication to tackling this pressing issue.

Consumer Demand for Healthier Choices

Indian consumers are increasingly prioritizing health and well-being in their purchasing decisions. According to a recent GlobalData survey, 73% of respondents indicated that health considerations often influence their food and beverage choices. This shift is driving demand for safer, sustainable, and antibiotic-free animal products, reinforcing the importance of the FSSAI’s directive.

The Road Ahead

Experts emphasize that strict enforcement of the ban will be critical to its success. Francis Gabriel Godad, Consumer Business Development Manager at GlobalData, highlighted the importance of grassroots-level implementation to ensure compliance. “A concerted effort is needed to reduce antibiotic use in agriculture, which will ultimately protect public health,” he said.
