New Delhi, September 22, 2024 – In a significant step toward strengthening international cooperation in the area of food safety, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) on the sidelines of the Global Food Regulators Summit, 2024, held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. This agreement sets the stage for deeper collaboration between the two countries, focusing on joint projects and technical partnerships to improve food safety standards.

The MoU was formalized through a signing ceremony attended by high-level representatives from both countries. Mr. Carlos Henrique Baqueta Fávaro, Brazil’s Agriculture and Livestock Minister, signed the agreement on behalf of MAPA, while Shri G. Kamala Vardhana Rao, CEO of FSSAI, represented India.

Commenting on the new partnership, Shri Rao stated, “Signing this MoU demonstrates our dedication to food safety and signifies a major advancement in our ongoing efforts to enhance international collaboration in food safety. We are eager to work with MAPA to achieve our common goals and enhance food safety in both countries.”

Brazil’s representative, Mr. Fávaro, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the importance of this bilateral relationship. “The signing of the MoU marks a milestone in the bilateral relations between the two countries in the field of food safety, allowing for technical cooperation and exchange of experience and knowledge with the aim of strengthening institutional collaboration and pursuing joint initiatives,” he said.

The MoU outlines a framework for collaboration that includes sharing best practices, conducting joint research, and organizing capacity-building programs aimed at improving food safety regulations in both nations. FSSAI and MAPA will work together to address emerging challenges in the food sector, such as foodborne diseases, pesticide residues, and the use of food additives, ensuring the highest standards of food safety are maintained in both countries.

This agreement is expected to pave the way for enhanced trade relations between India and Brazil, particularly in the agricultural and food sectors, by ensuring that food safety standards are harmonized, benefiting consumers in both countries.

The Global Food Regulators Summit, where this MoU was signed, serves as a platform for food safety regulators from around the world to discuss global challenges, innovations, and strategies for improving food safety systems. With this new partnership, India and Brazil have demonstrated their commitment to working together on food safety for the well-being of their citizens and the global community.
